How to NOT be a Fool...

Seeing as I work in a computer lab, and interact with students all day, it should come as no surprise that I have developed some opinions about the state of our various educational systems. And truth be told, not many of my opinions are favorable...
I am perhaps assuming too much here, but I always assumed that if a student is granted a diploma by an institution, that student should possess at least cursory skills in things like doing homework, reading, basic math. But, true to form, assuming
anything is a bad idea. It's quite common for students to come into the lab, and be barely capable of working on their own. These students seem to think tutor
is a French word for person who does my homework for me.
Needless to say, I find this annoying. I work on my own. I struggle. I get mad. Then, suddenly, everything makes sense! And the struggle to get to that point is what helps me retain that knowledge...
I suppose I may just be attempting to apply my own personal ethics and motivations to people who are nothing like me. Maybe some people are in school purely because they don't know what else to do. Maybe they are here because their friends are here.
Maybe they should try harder!
:)

I wish I could tell you it was any different out of school, but...
I am not sure it is entirely the fault of the school system, though. People are conditioned to go about getting what they need/want in a certain way at an early age.
Sometimes a dedicated individual can change less effective outlooks. Maybe that's where the educational system does fail.
